Hay Chris The turret on the Abram's is huge, easily two thirds the size of the hull, to see it on the base have a look at my blog (http://spudnik1970.blogspot.co.nz/) there's a few pics of it being sized up on the hull J
The hole at the end was not needed, the unit is made of three layers, the centre piece which the rack and pinion is all cut from 10mm Aluminium, then the side plate that is closest to the hull is also 10mm, The spring is 28mm diameter so it needed to be 15mm out from the hull so the spring would not bind, from all my testing the 10mm centre is well strong enough to hold the spring pressure and it also means there is not as much wastage of material just to run up the side of the spring. Finally there is a 5-6mm mild steel inner plate that allows for it to be tapped so the bolts can go from the outside of the tank and thread into it and hold it against the side walls.
