I had the same idea, but let me make one simple observation. The rangefinder he uses had a max range of 5.5 meters. IR rangefinders dont get much better than that anyways.
Beyond that, especially on a bright sunny day, the resolution drops to the point of uselessness. I actually tried the same idea...
