The short answer is: yes, you can use #25 chain for the first reduction and #35 for the second reduction if you want. #25 is strong enough for our purposes.

However, the primary reason we switched from #25 sprockets on the motor to #35 sprockets is the difficulty finding #25 "axle" sprockets with the proper number of teeth and hub size. If you can find the #25 sprockets you need (for a decent price), then go ahead and use the #25 motor sprocket. If not, you can switch the #25 motor sprockets for #35 sprockets and use #35 throughout the drive train.

If you are using motors with an 11mm keyed shaft (4mm key), I have the tooling to make #35 sprockets with the proper bore and key slot. I'll make you a pair for the cost of the blank sprockets and postage.
