they're a bit big but do stand out.

in the past I thought something like that would be a good idea, but would
take it one step father. have the flag mast mount into a ear-phone plug and
wire the plug for powering the gun, this way the gun can't fire without the
flag (or plug) being plugged in making it part of the require kill switch
system of the tank.

for the mast i would think a thin piece of spring steel / music wire with a
few coils at the base (for when they drive them under trees) they can fold
over but as it still might be too stiff and cause the socket to want to
break off from the tank and cause some damage maybe use a short piece of rod
into the pug and then a short piece of rubber tubing to attach the flag to.

After being and acting as a "newbie" at the Gettysburg event, I found that
"theory thinking" and "practical combat" might be two very different
environments...

For IFF, I would suggest something SIMPLE:

What about a long antenna on each tank, and colored triangular flags? As
this hobby grows, and tank battles involve more than 5 vehicles on each
sides, and team members changing at each battle, it is difficult to remember
who is who... If we put colored visible flags on each tank, then we can
easily identify friendlies and foes! The "red team" and the "blue team". Just
distribute the removable flags at the next battle!

Below is a photo to illustrate this idea, but those flags are too big.

Just a suggestion!
