They are actually called "ball transfers".  They are a single large steel 
ball riding on a bed of smaller recirculating steel balls.  Some are 
environmentally sealed, others are not.  Non-sealed ones, in a dirty wet 
environment will get crunchy and eventually lockup.   The ones I'm familiar 
with cannot be opened up and serviced.  They are a throw away item.
