i don't know about welding but have heard it's different from welding steel. as to cost... i guess that depends on how you want to look at it, it may cost you a bit more (specially if you go for thicker or stronger aluminum) but comparing it to what it may weigh is you used steel would be the most important trade off - or so i would think.
