My students love the EasyDriver from Sparkfun for smaller steppers.
It can do up to 30V 700mA per phase.

They like the BigEasy for larger steppers.  It can do up to 30V 2A per

I have a prototype turret rotate that uses EasyDriver, NEMA 17 stepper
9 inch Lazy Susan, 16T 25P chain sprocket/hub and 80T custom ring gear
cut by waterjet.
