I postewd this to Autocat, but is has more relevance to RDA-L. Supposedly RDA is designed to be an improvement over AACR2 for the cataloguing of newer genre of library resources. We do not find that to be the case. Consider equipment as an example.
If an irate spouse threw the Kobo or Kindle borrowed from the library at the head of a partner, I suppose it could be considered an "object" when the spouse is charged for assault, but wouldn't the same be true of a "volume"? "Object" is a too generic term for a computer or electronic reader. SLC adds "equipment" to the AACR2 List 2 of GMDs, and to RDA as an unmediated carrier type. __ __ J.
