No joke. It was late 1970's early 1980's ((M) was 1974) when I first
proposed an ISBD for nonbook maerials. I was young at the time (I am
now 80), and those older male librarians who laughed at me thought
libraries were for print resources. They also thought book stores
were for popular titles, not libraries. All are long departed I
assume.

In checking the ISBD(NBM) you will note I was on the original working
group.

The material specific data area following edition was our idea. We
were sorry to see that MARC split that area up into different fields
for different materials. They corrected the mistake of having a
different field (261) for film imprints, but separate fields for
material specific data remain. There re only so many 25X numbers; had
we remained in MARC, we sould have run out of fields as new genre
appears.
