I have a question related to the definitions of the following terms used in RDA
and the Statement of International Cataloguing principles:
How would you define the differences between "jurisdiction", "government" and "
territorial authority"?
The terms "jurisdiction" and "government" are both used in RDA, whereas
"territorial authority" is used in the Statement of International Cataloguing
principles.
Government
"A government is the system by which a state or community is governed. In
British English (and that of the Commonwealth of Nations), a government more
narrowly refers to the particular executive in control of a state at a given
time —known in American English as an administration. In American English,
government refers to the larger system by which any state is organized. "

According to the RDA glossary, "government" is defined as "The totality of
corporate bodies (executive, legislative, and judicial) exercising the powers of
a jurisdiction."
So "government" is used as defined in American English?
But: RDA 11.22.18.1 Heads of State, Heads of Government --> "government" seems
to refer to the "the particular executive in control of a state at a given
time"?
Jurisdiction
"Jurisdiction is the practical authority granted to a formally constituted legal
body or to a political leader to deal with and make pronouncements on legal
matters and, by implication, to administer justice within a defined area of
responsibility. The term is also used to denote the geographical area or
subject-matter to which such authority applies." ( "Jurisdiction" in Wikipedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurisdiction> )
"Jurisdiction" is not mentioned in the RDA glossary, but I assume that it is
used "to denote the geographical area or subject-matter to which such authority
applies"?
We experienced some difficulties when trying to work out the German equivalents
for "government" and "jurisdiction" as used in RDA: The German term for
"government" (Regierung) does have the narrower British English meaning only,
whereas the German term for "jurisdiction" (Gebietskoerperschaft) seems to fit
both "government" in the wider sense and "jurisdiction"
