On the oldest computer in the pair:

librsync: 0.9.7
python:   2.2.1

The old server (with millons of files) has many other large (> 2 GB) files
which don't seem to cause trouble.

The two files were probably being read from when rdiff-backup was running.
But that shouldn't make a difference on Linux, should it?
