The closest you're going to be able to get on that is creating a compressed copy of the files in question using rsyncable gzip (see http://glasnost.beeznest.org/articles/206 for an introduction, and http://samba.anu.edu.au/ftp/unpacked/rsync/patches/gzip-rsyncable.diff for the patch itself) and using rdiff-backup on that.
