A late reply, but you may find an article I wrote interesing: http://www.halfgaar.net/backing-up-unix There are some issues you need to watch out for when backing up a complete system. Rdiff-backup 1.0.x lacks the --preserve-numerical-ids for example, making it almost unusable for system backups.
