I would suggest people try the verbosity options.  rdiff-backup does
show more errors/messages at higher -v levels.  I'm using rdiff-backup
--print-statistics -v5 to print more detailed information (including a
line for every file) to the terminal (and backup log).

I agree the error management still needs improvements.  However, I have
had rdiff-backup recover from some failed backups (once I understood the
program and gave it a chance).
