Yes, this is possible.

Use the same target for rdiff-backup. It will complain that the directory does not look like a rdiff-backup target (no rdiff-backup-data dir inside), so you have to use the --force switch when doing the first backup. Creating an empty rdiff-backup-data directory in the target dir could also work, then you don't even need --force.
Either way, it will use the existing files.
