Do you run your script as non-root while the problem files are
hardlinked and have special permissions?

I'm afraid I run the script as root. And, none of the files are weird
hardlinks or sockets or anything. For example
> ls -ltr /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/
total 32
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 72 2007-09-12 12:15 resolv.conf
-rw-r--r-- 3 root root 165 2007-09-12 12:15 ifcfg-eth1
-rw-r--r-- 3 root root 266 2007-09-12 12:15 ifcfg-eth0
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 230 2007-09-12 12:15 hosts
Those are just bog standard text files as far as I can see, and yet,
error on each one.
