Ok, sorry, the solution was pretty simple... but I'll reply to my own post
here just in case anyone else wants to revert...

rm -Rf /usr/lib/python2.*/site-packages/rdiff_backup
rm -f /usr/bin/rdiff-backup
rm -f /usr/bin/rdiff-backup-statistics
...and then just re-install the previous version.   Oh, and that did fix the
problem.  I guess I'll stick to 1.0.5 for now.  1.2.2 does sound like it has
some cool features... hopefully I'll have time to give it another shot when
I have more time.
