My guess would be that the file is open, but Windows has several
different ways of locking a file open and then being nasty to other
programs trying to use it --
- The way the registry .DAT file is kept open while a user is logged in
-- makes the file totally inaccessible to anything, error message is a
generic file access error / read error.
- The way Word documents are kept open by later versions of Word (2003
and 2007), and PDF documents by later versions of acrobat reader -- file
access may or may not be totally denied to everything else, and you get
an error that says "this file is being used by the following program:
<name of program>".
Maybe QuickBooks recently changed from method 1 to method 2 of locking
files open and rdiff-backup doesn't like it -- try locking a Word
document open that way and running rdiff-backup on it; see if it
complains. Also try rdiff-backup'ing your registry and see if the error
is different.

I'm getting this error again. Last time I got it, I started a new
repository.
But it's back...
Here's a -v 6 listing around the error.

What's odd is that it claims it finished the backup pass, but
rdiff-backup exits with a 255 code.
It also regresses the next backup before starting, so clearly it
doesn't think it ended correctly not-withstanding the log.
