Sorry to have posted to quickly ...
The syntax is OK for filenames with $ inside, I have just changed the
double-quotes to single-quotes.
The problem was that I had previousely launched rdiff-backup with sudo
command and the dir/file permissions on backup target where root:root.
Changing file permissions on target let the command run OK.
