Hi Peter,
Your best bet may be, if possible, to use a 64bit version of python and
pull 64bit builds of the extra packages you require from Christoph Golke's
repository: http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/
(He also provides 32bit builds if you want to stick with 32 bits)
There is a good (and maintained) drop-in replacement for PIL called Pillow
that Christoph also provides.
