ETL (also known as "ETL-Semko", or "Intertek") is one of several Nationally
Recognized Testing Laboratories ("NRTL") authorized to test products to various
safety and other standards. This authorization is granted by OSHA.
ETL tests to exactly the same standards as UL. An approval by ETL to any given
standard is as valid as any Recognition or Listing from UL. Your AHJ is
clearly aware of this and handled the situation correctly.
Some AHJs are not as familiar with the various agencies as they should be and
may insist on a "UL" approval. A quick phone call to ETL by the AHJ is usually
all that's needed to clear up any confusion.
