You could try one of these types, but our experience with switching high
voltage DC has not been good. Even in DC lines you can get spikes, which
take out the relay. I have seen 600 VDC ones die on 250 volt DC lines.
I would suggest he run a high voltage DC supply from the AC mains.

It seems to me this is a job for a solid state relay. But I have never
had to do 500 VDC if it were AC it would be fine.
Can you shut off the inverter reducing the DC to no load switching?
The frequency is also important.
