If you have internet access at the site, there is an easy way to send a text message to a cell phone via e-mail. For example if your client uses Verizon the e-mail would be addressed to:

[email protected]


You can google to find out how to do this with the other wireless carriers. Automating this might be tricky...

We have used the Mitsubishi Alpha PLC, it has a GSM interface and can be setup to perform this task.
It is a few hundred dollars, is best setup with a DC power supply.
We get them from Campbell & George in San Jose CA.
