The issue of whether or not to discuss dealer pricing of RE equipment on the list server seems to be contentious. This list is publicly accessible, and folks don't want the public to be able to calculate dealer margins or to think they should get wholesale prices. It occurs to me that some folks on the list may get and give better deals than other wrenches, due to quantity buying or deals they have worked with distributors.
Some seem to feel that mentioning prices should flat out be against the rules. Others feel like wrenches should just restrain themselves, leave the heavy hand of the moderator out of it. Still others feel that the info is out there already, so no big deal.
Once the cat's price is out of the bag, further discussion of whether mentioning prices is good or bad is something that several wrenches do not want to see. Those wrenches consider it along the lines of "off topic." I agree, and think that it degrades the list's signal to noise ratio, which is why I would like to settle this some way.
It does occur to me that nearly every instance of price mentions can be avoided quite easily. The latest point could have been made by saying that xx number of one inverter costs x times as much as the equivalent wattage of string inverters.
So, please let me know what you think:
a. make price naming against the rules
b. prices on list are perfectly OK
c. everyone contact the price-namer off list with their sentiments about the posting
d. ????
Did I mention responding to me off list about this?
