We have been there, and are doing the discharges and EQ's. 

Actually you have to be in float to get the eq to come on but your procedure
might work, never tried it that early in the charge process.

IMHO Interstate makes a decent battery. It sounds like to me that you are
not Equalizing but just trying to BULK. You'll need at least one robust EQ
cycle to bring the SG's in line and likely 2-3 a couple of days apart. At
least the Magnum's of a couple of years ago are not intuitive to get into
EQ, as I recall you need to 1st be in BULK charging before it can be set to
EQ and this is/was done by holding down the "Charger" button until it moves
into EQ. Wrenches please correct my fading memory if this is not correct. I
would get the V to 62-63 and hold it there for 3-4 hours and then recheck
your SG and see if further EQ's are in order.
