Jeremy,
You can use a PV Powered inverter if the Hydro is in range of the sizes
they make. You just need to rectifiy the AC output of the hydro. They
are very tolerant of spikes and load changes in the house. You will
also need a device to prevent the voltage from exceeding the maximum
input voltage of the inverter. This is simpler and less expensive that
trying to synchronize the turbine to the grid.

Got a phone call from a gentleman that is in need of a device that
will take 240v 60hz and synch with the local utility.
I guess kind of like a grid tie inverter, but AC in not DC input.
