Any guess or knowledge as to how much load is required to smooth out the
waveform?

The Kohler RES series generator has a bug when used in conjunction with
the Xantrex XW inverters: The power waveform of the RES generators is
distorted under no-load conditions. The result is that the XW will not
connect. A fix is pending but a new firmware release date is not yet
predicted.
