I ask the client to ship me all the hardware, camera, routers, modem etc and
set it up and datalog to ascertain precisely how much energy is required, and
if there are any efficiencies to be gain ie DC direct vs Inverter. Many
cameras, at least in the cold north here, also have small heaters in them to
prevent fog or ice which can add to power load significantly so that needs to
be considered. If I am testing in summer I'll put camera in the freezer and
continue to monitor it's power consumption.

As many have already echoed here, clients generally have little idea what is
really needed. That's why they come to us for our expertise!

If a client does not want to do this process, I generally pass on the job. From
experience the client who is unwilling to do proper load analysis is the first
to threaten legal when it doesn't work. Many times years later they come back
with tail between legs for help and more willing to follow the process.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Very small PV systems for surveillance or other"micro"
loads

What do you do for very small off-grid systems that people want for specific
equipment? Do you have a "go-to" configuration, or do you size and design
everything custom?

For example, I frequently get, "I want to run cameras at a remote site and the
total requirement is 100W, 24 hours a day."

It's not economical to reinvent the wheel every time.
