I have Surrettes, Industrial Hawkers FLA with steel cases, NiFe, Li-on and the traditional plastic case types. The Surrettes are a very easy to maintain battery little water use and stays clean.The steel case seams to need cleaning allot more, goes through more water but also have the a great life span for older technology. NiFe they say will last forever if you can afford the cost upfront just change the fluid every five to ten years,they do not produce the gas like FLA's do. The jury is still out on Li-on even with BMS we have had issues with 48 volt not 24 just the 48 volt manufacture says they are working on it. I would only use steel if you are in an area that gets regular abuse or is exposed to the elements. It does seam in the research that the steel case comes from the requirement in industrial moving equipment for protection and leak prevention, not to be bomb proof.
