There are many things that can affect that post temperature, so to get the
overall temperature of the battery on the side of the battery tends to be more
accurate.

When I take temp measurements on a flooded battery it’s primarily the
electrolyte temp via the well. If I suspect a shorted plate/cell I will do the
side of the battery, if I suspect a loose connection I’ll check the posts, both
pos and neg. Most of the time just by checking the electrolyte well, you will
detect most temperature problems with the temp of the electrolyte, but the
electrolyte being made up mostly of water will also act as a heat sink, so it’s
best to have a temp sensor attached to the side, about 1/3 below the top level
of the plates.

A post temp sensor it just measuring the neg, or positive grouping, if there is
an problem with the opposite grouping, or physically elsewhere in the battery
the post sensor may not see the added heat while the side sensor will see the
added heat within the electrolyte.

Some, not all of the post sensors can be mounted on the post or the side of the
battery, Rolls likes the side mount better in general. If you had a choice
between a post mount sensor and no sensor at all I would choose the post
mounted sensor as something is always better than nothing.

HI Steve,

Can you explain the difference between plate temperature and over all battery
temperature?

What sort of temperature difference are you seeing? IE post is hotter or
cooler and by how much.

thanks
jay

Typically you want the BTS installed and any and every case… The BTS should be
installed below the level of the plates not on the top of the battery. To do
this you need to have the BTS about 1/3 to ½ the way down the side (Single
Wall) of the battery, and I would suggest running some duct tape around the
battery on the sensor to keep it on the side of the battery.

For a Double wall battery, Although the sensor will be close, it will get
better readings in between the plastic walls. To do so you can pull the top
off the battery and put it between the walls. There is usually some black
silicone around the pos/neg terminals, all you need to do is replace that with
regular old RTV silicone…

Post mounts are okay, but Surrette prefers the side mounts with another method
of securing the sensors… The post mounts only sense the plate temp, not the
overall temp of the battery.

Temperature is a killer, and my years at Outback, and Trace I had no idea of
how damaging this was until I came to work for Surrette.
For every 10 Degrees C above 25 you lose 50% of your life cycles… For example
if you installed these in the Mojave desert where six month of the year they
would reach 95F+ you would probably lose about 25-30% of your life cycles… One
of the ways to combat this if you can is vault them…it’s a lot of work, but the
earth even in those environments will keep them cooler.
