William:

I agree with Allan. I have both a Leica "analog" refractometer and a Sper Scientific "digital" and prefer to use the Leica.

The Leica "analog" is accurate to 3-digits (1.xxx) just like the "digital", and the times I have compared readings on the same cell between the two units, they are very close (both have temperature compensation).

The "digital" requires a bigger electrolyte sample and takes more time to prep it for the next sample.

Some "digitals" have measurement storage & upload functions, which could be useful for keeping maintenance logs on large battery banks.

In my case, I am normally dealing with 1 string of batteries (12 or 24 2V cells). Measurements are easily made and logged. The Leica doesn't use batteries, so that's also one less thing to worry about.

William,
Why bother, when a refractometer is cheaper, does a better job, self-corrects for temperature, and won't be broken when you pull it off of your truck?
Here's an example, quickly found on eBay, if you're not familiar with these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Robinair-75240-Coolant-and-Battery-Refractometer-/131591979786?hash=item1ea37e430a&item=131591979786&vxp=mtr
This has come up before on this list.

Friends:

We are maintaining more vented battery systems.  I am contemplating purchase of a digital hydrometer.  Does anyone have any experience with one of these?

Thanks in advance,
