Benn,

I would think a phone call or email (to get it in "writing") from the manufacturer would be the safest route to take. I know PV glass is no standard issue product and must vary some from manu to manu...composition, thickness, texture (or not), coatings? So I guess I'm more concerned about the affect the paint thinner may have on the glass, it's surface, a coating?... than its affect for several seconds it might be in contact with the glass/frame sealant. I'll also bet a dollar that the sealant is much better than anything we can get.

Wrenches,
I received some modules lately (and it has happened in the past) that have some degree of silicon on the front glass. It is usually either some spatter or a smear of sorts. These are from a distributor warehouse and in most cases i've seen the modules removed directly from the manufacturers factory wrapped pallet.

Aside from the fact that they should be thoroughly inspected prior to being "accepted"....and aside from the fact that they should not leave the factory in that condition.... points that i'm sure will be discussed.... for now i am writing to ask about dealing with "silicone on module glass"

Rubbing it off with a gloved finger works, but is time consuming when there are several spatters, and it leaves a "rubbed/smeared/discoloured " mark on the glass. I'm curious if the rubbed/discoloured mark can negatively affect performance (doesn't seem likely) or have other adverse affects?

It was suggested, indirectly by the mfgr, (mfgr told distributor, distributor told me) to use varsol (paint thinner) to "break down the silicone so it comes off easier". I'm not sure how i feel about that since it opens a possible risk of excess paint thinner getting to the silicone along the frame and breaking down the silicone that is "weather sealing" the module.

Have you ever had modules coming directly out of manufacturer packaging that has silicone on the front glass??? Have you requested/received any sort of reply from the manufacturer about the cause/affect of such silicone and how to properly remove it?

Would love to hear comments.

Benn
