I have measured the energy used by a garage door opener on more than one
occasion.  they draw a fair amount of power while operating, however. they
don't draw power otherwise so the total energy is very low.  I am wondering
if a low cost non pure sine inverter to AC operated off the switches which
would be low voltage would not serve the same low energy use and
reliability of a DC garage door opener
