Thanks for the responses on this subject line. Beyond polling the Wrenches I reached out to various suppliers.
The Wrench comments that the sensor itself is always RS-485 seem borne out by my separate research. Some sensor vendors are integrating the necessary accessories for connection straight to the LAN local area network--Rainwise PVmet-100 is one example although their irradiance sensor doesn't mount in the plane of the PV array. Other sensor vendors point to third party suppliers to convert the raw sensor feed into actionable data. This probably costs less in money if I can acquire the additional know how.
