Friends:
Is this an application where a frameless module might be a good solution? We used the Lumos panels in one installation <https://millersolar.com/MillerSolar/case_studies/marine_corrosion/2016_Lumos/2016_Lumos.html>, not to avoid snow damage but to avoid marine-environment corrosion. Without a frame, the snow may have nowhere to grip on the panels and cause damage. These panels cost a premium but do offer some unique advantages. By the way, the modules have no aluminum components, which is why they are corrosion resistant (except for little aluminum ferrules, which we will be replacing). Snow/ice builds up on the mud sill and eventually rips the frame off. We've actually been writing a clause into our contracts for folks in high snow load areas. Some spots exceed 400psf. It's crazy. The one on the left has a severely bent bottom frame section, and the one on the right has a completely failed (torn away) bottom frame section. The other modules in the photo have failed bottom frame sections AND glass/laminate creeping out through the (missing) bottom frame. I believe the glass on those two shattered after it started creeping out of the frame ... Just haven't seen that type of damage here in Colorado/ New Mexico/ Wyoming. I think its much drier here overall, so perhaps our snow is lighter weight. Heavy Spring Snows seem to melt off but with climate changes, we might start seeing new types of damage. Its 4 PVs in landscape, I currently have it designed with the lower edge at 3.5 feet off the ground which is actually questionable with the 2-3 feet of snow we get here sometimes. Flat ground, 25 degree pitch. If anybody has pics (or words of wisdom) of the bottom edge of a PV frame being ripped of due to snow not being able to shed properly from *this type of installation (or pole mount would help)*, I would appreciate the help.
