We have tried all manner of gadgets over the years and haven’t found anything 
more accurate than a hammer and a tuned (experienced) ear.  Gentle taps (so as 
to not damage roof) are all that’s needed.  We also have a 12” piece of solid 
#10 copper in each tool belt for those tricky roofs where rafter spacing isn’t 
consistent or there are sistered rafters for long spans.  Insert the wire thru 
a test hole, bend into a U shape, then rotate to find exact location of rafter, 
mark with chalk, then go to town.
