Hi Howie, I’ve had this same quandary when working with some specialty Pv-powered solar thermal projects. I really like the Laing pumps but they are very expensive and the D5 Solar version can be hard to get.
Recently I’ve tried the Chinese-made Topsflo DC pumps and despite some initial skepticism, have been pleasantly surprised at how well they have worked. A major plus for retrofit/replacement is that the Topsflo TD5 uses a volute that is essentially a clone of the El-Sid pump body-albeit in stainless rather than bronze. I have to say that I haven’t actually tried a retrofit using the Topsflo motor with an El-Sid pump body and impeller, but I suspect that it will work. At the very least the pump body is a perfect replacement for pipework set up for El-SIDS. I have a Topsflo TD5 working in a PV-powered hot-tub heater setup that has been working daily for almost 4 years now with no issues, so the quality seems pretty decent.
