Thanks, Nick. That is definitely an advantage that I didn't consider I suppose. You're talking about the AC rating limit (microinverter combined output). I think it would be rare around here because small battery systems are not appropriate for central air conditioning backup. Most of the systems we install are 40kWh, and that's cutting it very close for most homes.
If my math is right, that allows about 23kW of PV (AC) with the IQ7 series before you exceed the limit. We did one maxed out system with 66 x 415W panels with IQ7A. We would be hard pressed to find a scenario where more PV is necessary while 40kWh of battery capacity is sufficient. While on the subject, it is important to note that only 80A of PV OCPD can land on the smart controller busbar. In the application above, that meant 44 microinverters. The other 22 had to be feeder tapped on the load side of the smart controller. That is not exactly an elegant solution. Totally irrelevant to this conversation, but interesting to note. I'm finding a lot of competitors in my market offering the IQ8 series without sunlight backup and I have been scratching my head as to why. I have been explaining to clients that it is not necessary to incur the extra expense, but that is a hard sell when someone else is telling them they are getting the latest and greatest. I don't want to roll over and join them, but I also don't want to miss an important benefit that I haven't considered.
