I was told specifically by Midnite Tech support that the AIO was
designed for parallel conductors. There isn't anything in the manual
that contradicts that, that I'm aware of.
I have never considered 2 lugs on a single bolt a violation. Its when
two conductors go into a single lug that is not designed for 2
conductors, that it's considered double lugging. If 2 lugs on one bolt
were not legal, how in the world would you ever wire L16s, golf cart
batteries, etc. in parallel?

This is an interesting option. I think it goes against the manual,
however, which could be flagged as a code violation.
I also considered Polaris taps that are rated for fine-stranded wire.

I have done several systems where we just paralleled two
batteries on the battery terminals, just like we'd do with lead
acid batteries, with a reverse return for the home runs. With the
active balancing, the reverse return is apparently not as
important, but I still think it's best practice.
MidNite Power is working on a custom gutter/wiring box for
coupling the PF16's directly to the AIO, but not sure on timeline
for it. I've seen a few really nice installs where someone used a
standard 10" gutter with cutouts in it directly on top of the
PF16's, then set the AIO's on top of that. No exposed wiring or
even conduit showing.
