None of the above... actually I fubared it, but my next line of code (in my head) was:

<cfset arguments.event.setValue("User",User)>

I was also copying Dan's crappy code... which did send me down the wrong path to start with. Actually I think it would throw a NULL REFERENCE error because save() returns void. Which means, unfortunately, that not only is Doug's example shorter, but more correct. My only redemption here is the fact that Doug didn't catch the fact that it would have thrown an error... unless save() DOESN'T return void (which could be the case, I can't go look it up at the moment).

Anyway... yeah, Doug, I gotcha now. :D Happy birthday!
