Nope - i'm running 7.0, bleeding edge version downloaded this morning.  When I dump the variable it looks like an XML object but there's something about it that is causing it to be rejected.

What version of CFMX? I'll bet you're on CFMX 6.1 - you need to be on
CFMX 7 (the type "xml" was introduced in 7.0).
