Absolutely dont knock the as/400!  I have been lucky enough to work in
two different jobs where as/400's were used.  the first, the as/400
was from the 70's and was still running the entire business.  It
wasn't the best situation, but it gives you an idea of how stable
these things are.

Where I work now, we have four main as/400's, several test ones and at
least one in all of our 209 branches.  The things you can do with
these machines are absolutely amazing.  (speaking strictly from a
database server perspective, because thats about all I have messed
with)

With the correct logicals (similar to indexes, but also similar to
views) you can query over billions (literally) of records in
milliseconds.  They are so specialized to what they do that they are
screaming fast.  I would prefer a correctly set up as/400 over any
oracle database any day.

They are a bit on the expensive side, and you generally see them in
accounting type roles, but man, they are nothing short of amazing.
