That was the first thing I tried. I was sure that option-a would
work, but I kept getting the wrong character. I'd have never guessed
it was option-n-a.

Most any accented character can be typed directly from the keyboard on
the Mac by typing the appropriate option key followed by the base
letter you want to accent (although some, like å - option-a, are just
one keystroke).
