FWIW- and this may have been suggested on the blog- Apache has pretty good logging facilities. Sounds like an access problem, in which case, the access logs would be a good place to look when things aren't going the way you want them to. You can get logging on pretty much anything apache does, which takes a lot of the uncertainties away (you can control the level as well). As I said, maybe already suggested, and fruitless in this case, but it's served me well every time I've had that type of problem. Just for those who may travel that direction, or whatever.
