How many aliases ? How long does it take ? During this time, are you able to 
see if the CPU is maxed out ? Are you able to turn on debugging and examine 
the query execution times ?

Although not on shared hosting, we use something called 'Reactor Compiler' 
(check the archives) that grinds through the config and generates all the 
objects in one go, and run that after each deployment.
