RB used to be a tool for beginners. :)
Amen. I was quite surprised at the decision to make ContainerControls
Pro-only, for this very reason. I would think it in RS' interest to
allow third parties to plug some holes for people new to the platform,
without resorting to the hassles of separate controls, plugins, etc.
Evidently, REAL expects one to pay for the privilege. That's the surprise.
Well, looking at it from RS' point of view I see two reasons why
container controls are Pro only:
1) Container controls do make distributing many kinds of custom controls
and solutions easier... but they are not the perfect solution for that.
So I wouldn't expect a huge number of commercial custom controls to be
shipped as containers.
2) If a user wants to purchase a custom control... why on earth do they
still use RB standard? I know, I know... maybe users don't want any of
the other Pro-only features besides containers. But isn't containers
enough to justify upgrading to Pro then? And, if not, then that user
probably isn't going to buy any custom controls for more than $5 anyway.
So I understand why they made Containers a pro feature.
That said... I was pretty vocal about wanting Containers to be a feature
in standard as well back when they first appeared.
And, if RS do not plan on adding any additional features to RB that will
allow easier and more feature-full distribution and development of
custom controls, then it would probably be a good idea to make
containers a standard feature. But, my guess is that they will, at
least eventually, want something more suited to that task... in which
case keeping containers a pro feature makes more sense.
