Here's the way RB's licensing structure should be broken down IMHO. (I own pro 5.5.5, but still haven't upgraded to 200X yet. The features are great, and I've been giving it a work out, but there are just too many bugs/ performance issues for me to live in it, not to mention lack of project manager).

Before I start, please not I hate the way companies such as MS have a hundred different editions of RB, but by expanding the RB family we might be able to keep us and RS happy.

RB Lite - Platform specific, single compilation target, no support for container controls or multi user databases and maybe no external plugin support. RB Standard - DIY version with container control support and plugin support. RB Database - Standard with multi user database support (still single compilation target) RB Professional - Database Edition with multiple compilation targets and hooks for remote debugger stubs, plus a bloody project collaboration manager! RB Enterprise - Database Edition, with a licence key for each platform's IDE (i.e - includes mac, windows and linux IDE key's.)

There is too much difference (multiple compilation targets, multi user databases, container controls + more) between Standard and Pro at the moment. IMO this is significantly contributing to the 3rd part market issues being discussed at such a great depth on the list at the moment.

Flame on,
Tom

Flame from me: I disagree on all suggestions.

My suggestion was to create (and compile) entry level examples and make a deal with Apple to put REALbasic Demo with pdf with entry level example on all Macintosh hard disks (just like what Apple does with AppleSoft and Apple II, then with Macintosh and HyperCard, now AppleScript/Automator and Macintosh).

That suggestion was not implemented - yet - and REALbasic is still here and REAL Software is still small and I still do not have my word to say in RS directions (and this may be a good thing :) ).

Cheers,

Emile
