Well sometimes icon changes don't occur until the desktop is rebuilt...

I'm not sure what to make of this. The Finder doesn't pull icons
out of thin air -- it assigns them from the type and creator codes,
or if it doesn't have any, then from the extension.
So, what exactly do you mean by "the don't have Type or Creator"
codes? How are you determining this?
