Oh yes, quite true. Automatic font substitution (which is how the OS goes and grabs glyphs for those Chinese characters from some other font, when the one you've specified doesn't have them) is a feature of Quartz font rendering.

Quartz does. If I rebuild and flip my internal switch to allow Quartz
rendering, everything looks the way it should.

Quickdraw in OSX, and is this the expected behavior?

Yep. Though it ought to work if the font you specify has the glyphs, I would think. But I think you're better off rendering with Quartz anyway.

(Also, you might want to put something in the RB documentation warning
about this, if it's not a fixable issue for the future)
