If you drag the HTTPSocket to the Window or use a HTTPSocket
Subclass, you could use the events instead. The way that the above
approach works is to wait to the end of the timeout before returning
in error. With events, you will get immediate notification that the
server is unavailable, which could be because the computer is offline
or because the requested server is offline/unavailable. Net Stakeout
uses this technique and is able to pretty much immediately notify the
user when a server is unavailable.
